Study Notes
Cerebrum Surface Features
- The cerebrum's surface is characterized by convolutions, including deep grooves called fissures, elevated folds called gyri, and shallow grooves between folds called sulci.
- The longitudinal fissure divides the two cerebral hemispheres.
- The lateral fissure (of Sylvius) differentiates the temporal lobe from the frontal and parietal lobes.
- The central sulcus distinguishes the frontal and parietal lobes.
- Both areas control the opposite side of the body.
- The central sulcus is positioned between two parallel sulci: the pre-central and post-central sulci.
- The lateral sulcus originates on the inferior surface and extends to the lateral surface, branching into the anterior horizontal, anterior ascending (or superior), and posterior rami.
- The lateral sulcus divides the occipital lobe into two vision-related parts: the lingual gyrus (inferior) and the cuneus (superior), located posterior to the parieto-occipital sulcus.
Inferior Surface of the Cerebrum
- The stem of the lateral sulcus divides the inferior surface of the cerebral hemisphere into an orbital part and a tentorial part.
