Location and Protection
- The cerebro, or brain, is located in the cranial cavity and protected by the cranium (skull).
- Meninges, a triple-layered membrane, also provide protection.
Structure
- Cerebrum: divided into two hemispheres (left and right), each consisting of four lobes:
- Frontal lobe: motor control, decision-making, and language
- Parietal lobe: sensory processing, spatial awareness, and attention
- Temporal lobe: auditory processing, memory, and language
- Occipital lobe: visual processing
- Cerebellum: coordinates movement, balance, and posture
- Brainstem: connects cerebrum to spinal cord, regulates basic functions (breathing, heart rate, blood pressure)
Functions
- Integrates sensory information from the environment
- Controls voluntary movements and actions
- Regulates body functions (e.g., hunger, thirst, sleep, emotions)
- Enables thought, learning, and memory
- Facilitates communication and language processing
