Study Notes
Basal Ganglia
- The basal ganglia consists of the caudate nucleus and putamen, together forming the striatum, and the globus pallidus
Cerebral Cortex
- The lobes of the cerebral cortex contain discrete areas that can be distinguished by their cytoarchitecture and are associated with specialized functions
- The cerebral cortex can be functionally divided into three general areas that span across both hemispheres:
- Sensory area
- Motor area
- Associative area
Motor Control
- Motor control arcs are often mediated by the spinal cord
- In the spinal cord, a sensory neuron synapses with and activates a motor neuron
- The Ia interneuron is activated by the same Ia afferent signal that causes the quadriceps to contract
