Study Notes
Central Venous Catheter (CVC)
- A catheter placed into a large vein for administering medication, fluids, or obtaining blood tests.
- Can be placed in veins in the neck (internal jugular vein), chest (subclavian or axillary vein), groin (femoral vein), or arms (PICC line).
CVC Uses
- Administering medication or fluids unable to be taken orally or would harm smaller peripheral veins.
- Obtaining blood tests, specifically central venous oxygen saturation.
- Measuring central venous pressure (CVP).
Central Venous Pressure (CVP)
- Pressure measurement of circulating blood flow within the right atrium via great veins in the thorax.
- Serves as a guide for assessing right and left side cardiac functions in absence of cardiorespiratory diseases.
Indications for Measuring CVP
- Long-term intravenous antibiotics.
- Long-term parenteral nutrition, especially in chronically ill persons.
- Long-term pain medications.
