10 Questions

Which of the following drugs is prone to cause phlebitis in peripheral veins?

Calcium chloride

What is the indication for measuring Central Venous Pressure (CVP)?

Need for intravenous therapy when peripheral venous access is impossible

What are the absolute contraindications to central venous access?

Distorted local anatomy (e.g., vascular injury, prior surgery, radiation history)

When should Plasmapheresis be performed?

When there is a need for intravenous therapy when peripheral venous access is impossible

What does monitoring the Central Venous Pressure (CVP) help quantify?

Fluid balance

What is the primary reason for monitoring the central venous pressure (CVP) in acutely ill people?

To quantify fluid balance

Which of the following is an absolute contraindication to central venous access?

Distorted local anatomy

What is a common indication for measuring Central Venous Pressure (CVP)?

Frequent or persistent requirement for intravenous access

Which of the following drugs is prone to cause phlebitis in peripheral veins?

Calcium chloride

In which situation is the monitoring of Central Venous Pressure (CVP) particularly important?

Need for intravenous therapy when peripheral venous access is impossible

Study Notes

Central Venous Catheter (CVC)

  • A catheter placed into a large vein for administering medication, fluids, or obtaining blood tests.
  • Can be placed in veins in the neck (internal jugular vein), chest (subclavian or axillary vein), groin (femoral vein), or arms (PICC line).

CVC Uses

  • Administering medication or fluids unable to be taken orally or would harm smaller peripheral veins.
  • Obtaining blood tests, specifically central venous oxygen saturation.
  • Measuring central venous pressure (CVP).

Central Venous Pressure (CVP)

  • Pressure measurement of circulating blood flow within the right atrium via great veins in the thorax.
  • Serves as a guide for assessing right and left side cardiac functions in absence of cardiorespiratory diseases.

Indications for Measuring CVP

  • Long-term intravenous antibiotics.
  • Long-term parenteral nutrition, especially in chronically ill persons.
  • Long-term pain medications.

Test your knowledge on central venous catheter (CVC) management and CVP measurements through manometer with this quiz. Learn about the placement of CVCs in different veins and their significance in medical-surgical nursing.
