Cell Membrane
- The cell membrane (also known as the plasma membrane) regulates what enters and exits the cell, controlling the movement of materials through selective permeability.
- It acts as a barrier, protecting the cell from its external environment.
Organelle for Energy Production
- The mitochondria is the organelle responsible for generating energy for the cell through a process called cellular respiration.
Nucleus
- The nucleus is the control center of the cell, containing most of the cell's genetic material (DNA) and responsible for controlling cell growth, division, and function.
Cell Wall (Plant Cells)
- The cell wall is a rigid, outer layer of plant cells, providing structural support, protection, and maintaining the cell's shape.
- It is composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin, allowing for flexibility and strength.
- The cell wall also helps to regulate the movement of materials in and out of the cell.
Cytoplasm
- The cytoplasm is the jelly-like substance within the cell membrane, where many cellular activities occur, including metabolic reactions, protein synthesis, and cell signaling.
- It provides a medium for the movement of organelles and molecules, and helps to maintain the cell's shape.
Vacuole (Plant Cells)
- The vacuole is a membrane-bound organelle found in plant cells, responsible for storing water, salts, and other substances.
- It helps to maintain the cell's osmotic balance, and also plays a role in the decomposition and recycling of cellular waste products.
