Flashcards

What is Mitosis?

A type of cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus, typical of ordinary tissue growth.

How many chromosomes in human cells?

Human body cells (somatic cells) contain 46 chromosomes, arranged in 23 pairs. One set comes from each parent.

What are Haploid cells?

Sex cells (sperm and egg) are haploid, containing half the number of chromosomes (23) found in somatic cells. This is so that when they combine, the offspring has the normal number (46).

When does DNA synthesis occur?

DNA synthesis happens during the S phase (synthesis phase) of the cell cycle, where the cell duplicates its DNA before cell division.

What is Meiosis?
