    Study Notes

    Cell Cycle Overview

    • The cell cycle consists of Interphase (G1, S, G2) and Mitosis (M Phase).

    Interphase

    • Interphase comprises three stages:
      • G1 Phase: First Growth Phase
      • S Phase: DNA is copied
      • G2 Phase: Second Growth Phase
    • At this stage, chromosomes are not visible and are replicated.
    • Random DNA mutations can occur during replication in Interphase.
    • Characterized as the organization phase and the reverse of prophase.

    Mitosis Phases

    • Mitosis involves division of the nucleus and DNA, detailed as follows:
      • Prophase:
        • Nuclear membrane begins to fade.
        • Chromosomes thicken and become visible.
        • Spindle fibers start forming between centrioles.
      • Metaphase:
        • Chromosomes align at the cell's equator.
        • Spindle fibers attach to each chromosome at the centromere.
      • Anaphase:
        • Centromeres divide allowing sister chromatids to be pulled toward opposite cell poles.
      • Telophase:
        • Nuclear membrane reforms around chromosomes.
        • Chromosomes uncoil and become less visible.
        • Division furrow or cell plate formation occurs; cytoplasm is divided.

    Cytokinesis

    • Cytokinesis is the process where the cytoplasm divides, resulting in two separate daughter cells.
