Study Notes
The Cell Cycle Overview
- The Cell Cycle is a series of events that cells undergo to grow and divide.
- Comprises distinct stages, highlighting the processes of growth and division.
Stages of the Cell Cycle
- Interphase: Longest stage, consisting of G1, S, and G2 phases.
- M Phase: Also known as the Mitosis phase, where actual cell division occurs through mitosis and cytokinesis.
Interphase Details
- G1 Phase: Initial growth phase where the cell increases in size and produces organelles.
- S Phase: DNA replication occurs, ensuring each new cell receives a full set of chromosomes.
- G2 Phase: The cell continues to grow and prepares for mitosis, ensuring all components are ready for division.
Mitosis Phases
- Mitosis consists of four stages: Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase (abbreviated as PMAT).
- Each stage plays a crucial role in the accurate separation of chromosomes.
Order of Cell Cycle Stages
- Correct sequential order: G1, S, G2, M.
- Complete cycle order including cytokinesis: G1, S, G2, Mitosis, Cytokinesis.
Reasons for Cell Division
- Cells divide to grow and develop, repair and replace damaged cells, and reproduce in organisms that use asexual reproduction (e.g., bacteria).
