  • Interphase and cytokinesis
  • Interphase and mitotic phase (correct)
  • Mitosis and prophase
  • Cytokinesis and anaphase

What occurs during the metaphase of mitosis?

  • Two nuclei are formed in the cell

Flashcards

Cell Cycle Phases

The life cycle of a cell, consisting of interphase and mitotic phase.

Mitosis Purpose

Cell division resulting in two identical cells containing the same number of chromosomes.

Mitosis Prophase

Chromosomes condense, spindle fibers appear, nucleus disappears.

Mitosis Metaphase

Chromosomes line up in the center of the cell.

Cytokinesis

The cell physically splits into two daughter cells after mitosis.

Study Notes

Cell Cycle

  • Cell cycle: the life cycle of a cell, from cell division to the next cell division.
  • Two phases: interphase and mitotic phase

Cell Division

  • Cell division: occurs when an organism needs to grow larger or replace dead/damaged cells.

Mitosis

  • Mitosis: the DNA or chromosomes divides and separates into 2 identical nuclei.
  • Four phases of mitosis:
    • Prophase: the chromatin condenses into X-shapes, spindle fibers form from centrioles, and the nucleus disappears.
    • Metaphase: chromosomes align along the center of the cell, centrioles reach opposite sides of the cell.
    • Anaphase: chromosomes separate and are pulled to opposite sides of the cell.
    • Telophase: chromosomes unite on each side of the cell, forming two nuclei

Mitosis Results

  • Result of mitosis: an exact copy of the original cell (same number of chromosomes).

Cytokinesis

  • Cytokinesis: after mitosis, the cell physically divides into two separate cells.
