Flashcards

Cell Theory

All living things are made up of cells. Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in organisms. New cells come from pre-existing cells.

Electron Microscope

A type of microscope that uses electrons to illuminate a specimen. It allows for much higher magnification and resolution than a light microscope, revealing incredibly fine details within cells.

Nucleus

The control center of the cell, containing the cell's genetic material (DNA). It directs all cellular activities and ultimately determines the characteristics of the organism.

Lysosomes

Small, membrane-bound sacs found within the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. They contain enzymes that break down waste products, cellular debris, and engulf foreign invaders, acting as the cell's recycling and cleanup crew.

Ribosomes

Tiny organelles responsible for protein synthesis, the process of building proteins. They read instructions from the DNA in the nucleus and assemble amino acids into functional proteins.
