Study Notes

Types of Motion

  • There are three types of motion.
  • Motion can be divided into three main categories.

Motion of Planets

  • Planets around the sun exhibit orbital motion.
  • Orbital motion is a type of circular motion.

Rectilinear/Translatory Motion

  • Rectilinear or translatory motion is a type of motion where an object moves in a straight line.
  • This type of motion occurs when an object moves from one point to another in a straight path.

Periodic Motion

  • Periodic motion is a type of motion that repeats after fixed intervals of time.
  • Examples of periodic motion include the motion of a pendulum, a spinning top, and the Earth's rotation.

Circular Motion

  • The path of circular motion is circular or elliptical in shape.
  • Circular motion can be either orbital or rotational.
