CBSE Board Examinations Overview
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is one of India's most prominent education boards, responsible for conducting various public examinations including AISEs. These examinations are conducted every year in March and April by regional offices located across major cities like Delhi, Allahabad, Patna, Ajmer, Chennai, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Panchkula, Dehradun, Thiruvananthapuram, and Dubai.
One key feature of the CBSE system is its emphasis on continuous evaluation. Rather than just one final examination, there are three sets of assessments throughout the academic year: Unit tests, Half Yearly Tests, and Annual examinations. Additionally, examiners conduct periodic mock tests throughout the session. This approach aims to ensure students have multiple chances to demonstrate their knowledge, rather than being judged solely on the results from one, potentially stressful test.
Moreover, the CCE scheme has been implemented since the 2017-18 academic year with the aim of reducing student pressure by ensuring timely completion of exams before the summer vacation period commences. In this new format, formative assessment plays a significant role alongside summative assessment. Formative assessment includes regular unit tests, mini exams, half-yearly exams, and project work. Summative assessment consists of annual exams and practical papers held between November and December. Each subject teacher prepares two question papers per term, four each semester, and eight annually. Students take only six exams over the course of the year—two each on odd dates and even dates during the first and second terms respectively.
In summary, the CBSE board emphasizes ongoing evaluations instead of relying heavily on one high-stakes exam at the end of the schooling cycle. Its approach seeks to reduce stress while still providing opportunities to gauge students' comprehension of the material they learn.
