Essential Knowledge
- Development economics is a rapidly evolving field of study that draws on principles and concepts from economics and political economy
- It is concerned with the economic, social, political, and institutional mechanisms necessary for rapid and large-scale improvements in levels of living
- Development economics combines traditional economic analysis with new models and broader multidisciplinary approaches
- It focuses on understanding developing economies to improve the material lives of the global population
What is Development?
- Traditional view: achieving sustained rates of growth of income per capita to enable a nation to expand its output
- New economic view: multidimensional process involving changes in social structures, popular attitudes, and national institutions, with a focus on reducing poverty, inequality, and unemployment
- Capability approach view: development should be evaluated based on the extent of freedom people have to promote and achieve their valued functions and capabilities### Development and Freedom
- Worthiness and esteem are conferred on countries that possess economic wealth and technological power.
- Human freedom involves an expanded range of choices for societies and their members, with minimization of external constraints.
Objectives of Development
- Development is both a physical reality and a state of mind where society has secured the means for obtaining a better life.
- Three objectives of development:
- Increase availability and widen distribution of basic life-sustaining goods (e.g., food, shelter, health, protection).
- Raise levels of living (e.g., higher incomes, more jobs, better education, greater attention to cultural and human values).
- Expand the range of economic and social choices available to individuals and nations.
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- MDGs are eight goals agreed upon by UN member states to combat poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation, and discrimination against women by 2015.
- SDGs replace MDGs, aiming to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all by 2030.
- SDGs address global challenges including poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice.
Measures of Development
- Development can be measured using different metrics, including:
- Per capita income (e.g., World Bank's classification of countries by economic status).
- Degree of international indebtedness (e.g., World Bank's classification of countries by debt levels).
- Level of human development (e.g., UNDP's Human Development Index (HDI)).
Human Development Index (HDI)
- HDI is a composite index measuring average achievement in three basic dimensions of human development:
- A long and healthy life.
- Knowledge.
- A decent standard of living.
- HDI ranks each country on a scale of 0 to 1 based on these three goals.
