Addition

• Definition: Combining two or more numbers to get a total or a sum.
• Symbol: + (plus sign)
• Example: 2 + 3 = 5
• Properties:
  • Commutative Property: The order of numbers being added does not change the result. (e.g., 2 + 3 = 3 + 2)
  • Associative Property: The order in which numbers are added does not change the result. (e.g., (2 + 3) + 4 = 2 + (3 + 4))
  • Distributive Property: Addition can be distributed over multiple numbers. (e.g., 2 + (3 + 4) = 2 + 3 + 4)

Subtraction

• Definition: Finding the difference between two numbers.
• Symbol: - (minus sign)
• Example: 5 - 2 = 3
• Properties:
  • Not Commutative: The order of numbers being subtracted changes the result. (e.g., 5 - 2 ≠ 2 - 5)
  • Not Associative: The order in which numbers are subtracted changes the result. (e.g., (5 - 2) - 1 ≠ 5 - (2 - 1))
  • No Distributive Property: Subtraction cannot be distributed over multiple numbers.
