    First World War

    Causes

World War I was caused by a complex interplay of events that began in the 19th century, where rival European powers formed alliances such as the Triple Alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy, and the Triple Entente between Great Britain, France, and Russia. Political instability and competition threatened these alliances, with Italy eventually entering the war in opposition to Germany and Austria-Hungary.

Tensions grew between Austria-Hungary and Serbia as Serbian nationalists attempted to unite all Slavic peoples living in the Balkan region into a single state, including South Slavs of Austria-Hungary. The German success in the Franco-German War established the German Empire, leading to a desire for revenge by the French. The assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife by Bosnian Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip on June 28, 1914, further stirred up brewing conflicts in the region.

Austria-Hungary used the assassination as an excuse to settle its dispute with Serbia. In anticipation of Russia's support of Serbia, Austria-Hungary gained support from William II of Germany before presenting a warlike ultimatum to Serbia. Serbia accepted most of Austria-Hungary's demands but sought international arbitration on some issues. Convinced that Austria-Hungary was ready for war, Serbia appealed to Russia for support. Austria-Hungary severed diplomatic relations with Serbia, and on July 28, 1914, declared war on Serbia. Within a week, most of Europe was at war.

    Impact on Society

The First World War had a profound impact on society, with an estimated 8.5 million soldiers and some 13 million civilians dying during the war. Four imperial dynasties collapsed as a result of the war: the Habsburgs of Austria-Hungary, the Hohenzollerns of Germany, the sultanate of the Ottoman Empire, and the Romanovs of Russia.

The war also led to the October Revolution in Russia, which put the Bolsheviks in power of the Russian government. The United States emerged as a world power, and countries in central and eastern Europe saw the growth of nationalism, setting the foundation for World War II. The war introduced new technologies and developments, such as chemical weapons, machine guns, tanks, and aerial combat.

In terms of medical care, the First World War significantly impacted medicine. Prior to the war, most medicine was archaic, but the best physicians and researchers were in the military, leading to significant discoveries that made a huge difference for public health. The war accelerated the development of medical advances, including screening for tuberculosis, treatment for tetanus, vaccines for typhoid, prevention of venereal disease, and disinfection for surgery.

The war also brought about seismic changes in American society. Women played an outsized role in the mobilization effort and seized the opportunity to demand the vote. The conflict also heralded the rise of conscription, mass propaganda, the national security state, and the FBI. It accelerated income tax and urbanization and helped make America the pre-eminent economic and military power in the world.

Despite the war being called the "war to end all wars," the United States has been at war somewhere around the world almost ever since. The war's impact on American society includes the great migration of African Americans, who found inequality intact upon their return from the war and demanded the vote. The conflict also accelerated the development of the American security state and FBI, and helped solidify America's role as a global watchdog for democracy.

The First World War had far-reaching consequences, politically, economically, and socially. It resulted in the downfall of four monarchies, contributed to the Bolshevik rise to power in Russia, ignited colonial revolts in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, and severely disrupted European economies.
