    Study Notes

    Sacraments

    • The Eucharist is a dynamic that gives back our lives to God, offering it back so that God can raise it up, and make us one with him and with each other.
    • In the Eucharist, we enter into Jesus' saving death and resurrection, and rise with him to go forth and serve each other in love.

    Confirmation

    • The bishop anoints the candidate with a hand and oil on the person's forehead, saying "Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit."

    Roots of Eucharist

    • The roots of the Eucharistic ritual come from the Passover meal.

    Matrimony

    • Matrimony, like Holy Orders, is a sacrament at the Service of children.
    • In marriage, the couple themselves are the ministers, and the priest witnesses their vows to each other.
    • Some couples light a unity candle, as a sign that the two of them have now become one.

    Holy Spirit

    • Life in the Spirit comes when we live with 'enthusiasm,' which is Greek for 'living in God.'
    • Jesus knew that all his good works were empowered by the Spirit- the same Spirit came to the apostles at Pentecost.

    Baptism

    • The sacrament of Baptism offers us a chance to be a member of God's people, the Body of the church.

    Anointing

    • Anointing imprints a spiritual seal or mark.
    • The anointing of the person with consecrated perfumed oil called chrism was added to the laying on of hands.

    Reconciliation

    • The Sacrament of Reconciliation begins when we look into our hearts and ask what we have done wrong when we examine our conscience and admit that we have failed and that we need God's help.

    Salvation

    • Once again, the sacrifice of Christ's body and blood is given for our salvation.

    Cross

    • Jesus Christ, who has helped us all be forgiven by his one-time sacrifice on the cross, sends his Spirit and we are renewed, and our awareness of God is re-awakened.

    New Life

    • Water not only symbolizes new life and death to our sinfulness and selfishness but in the sacred scriptures, water is always an image of transition—of transformation.
