Alternative Calendars
- Christians count time from the birth of Christ.
- Jewish people count time from the year of the world's creation.
Gregorian Calendar
- Introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582.
- Follows the practice introduced by Dionysius Exiguus over 1000 years earlier.
- Dionysius described time after Christ's birth as anno Domini (AD), Latin for ‘in the year of our Lord’.
- Now, the term Common Era (CE) is commonly used instead of AD.
- The time before this is referred to as Before Common Era (BCE), replacing 'before Christ' (BC).
- This system does not include a zero year; the first year is AD 1 or 1 BC.
- Dates without AD/CE or BC are usually considered to be AD/CE.
Circa
- Circa (c.) means ‘about’ and is used when an exact date is uncertain, e.g., c.2010.
Century Recognition
- To determine the century, add 1 to the initial number of the year.
- For example, 1347 falls in the fourteenth century.
- An exception is the final year of a century, such as the year 2000, which was the last year of the twentieth century.
