Study Notes
Pericardium
- Membrane surrounding and protecting the heart, located in the mediastinum.
- Composed of two main parts: fibrous pericardium and serous pericardium.
- Fibrous Pericardium: Tough, inelastic connective tissue preventing heart overstretching and anchoring it in the mediastinum.
- Serous Pericardium: Thinner, double-layered membrane with an outer parietal layer and inner visceral layer (epicardium), which adheres tightly to the heart.
- Pericardial cavity contains lubricating pericardial fluid, reducing friction as the heart contracts.
Layers of the Heart Wall
- The heart wall has three layers:
- Epicardium: External layer, also known as the visceral layer of the serous pericardium.
- Myocardium: Middle layer, consisting of cardiac muscle responsible for heart contractions.
- Endocardium: Inner layer lining the heart chambers and valves.
Flow of Blood
- Blood circulation sequence begins in the right atrium, flows to the right ventricle, then moves to the lungs for oxygenation.
- Oxygenated blood returns to the left atrium and is pumped into the left ventricle for distribution to the body.
