Cardiovascular System Functions
- Major functions include transportation of oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products.
- Regulation of body temperature, pH levels, and fluid balance.
- Protection against blood loss and infection through immune responses.
Heart Structure
- The outer layer of the heart is known as the pericardium, providing protection and reducing friction.
- The myocardium is the muscular middle layer responsible for contraction and pumping.
Heart Function
- The ventricles, specifically the left ventricle, are responsible for pumping oxygenated blood out of the heart to the body.
- The right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs for oxygenation.
Blood Vessel Types
- Major blood vessels carrying deoxygenated blood include the superior and inferior vena cavae and the pulmonary arteries.
- Systemic circulation involves the aorta carrying oxygen-rich blood away from the heart.
Components of the Cardiovascular System
- Main components include the heart, blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries), and blood itself.
- Not included in the cardiovascular system are lymphatic structures or organs such as the spleen.
