Carbon Monoxide Monitoring
- Fire Department personnel are responsible for identifying and responding to CO issues, including first aid care if necessary.
- CO monitors must be functional and should measure at least O2 and CO gas levels.
- Before entering a structure suspected of having CO, the instrument must be calibrated in fresh air.
- Evacuate all occupants, and call emergency services immediately if CO poisoning symptoms present, like severe headaches, nausea, and disorientation.
- If the structure's oxygen level is below 19.5%, all personnel entering the structure must wear SCBA.
- Areas to check for CO include fireplaces, furnaces, boilers, space heaters, gas-fired appliances, and gas water heaters, gas clothes dryers.
- If the CO reading exceeds 10 ppm in residential structures and 35 ppm in commercial or industrial structures, notify the gas company.
- Document all CO readings and their locations in the structure, including any LEL readings obtained, and incorporate this information in all relevant reports.
- If the source of CO can be easily identified, shut off the fuel supply and ventilate the building as needed.
- Occupants should be advised to check their CO detectors according to manufacturer recommendations, and Fire Department personnel must not disconnect or deactivate any CO detector.
- CO is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas, a byproduct of combustion, and even small levels can cause illness or death.
- The source of CO may be transient and may not be detectable in all cases.
CO Levels
- Low CO levels (1-9 ppm) can cause headaches, nausea, and dizziness.
- Moderate CO levels (10-29 ppm) can cause fatigue, chest pain, and confusion.
- High CO levels (30-99 ppm) can cause impaired coordination, unconsciousness, and death.
- Very High CO levels (100+ ppm) cause a rapid loss of consciousness and death in 1-3 breaths.
