Carbon Compounds
Organic Compounds
Organic compounds contain carbon atoms connected to hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, halogens, and sometimes other nonmetal elements. They primarily consist of hydrocarbons and biological macromolecules like proteins, nucleic acids, polysaccharides, and lipids. Hydrocarbons can be further classified into three categories: aliphatic, aromatic, and heterocyclic, depending on their chemical structure.
Inorganic Compounds
Inorganic compounds do not contain hydrogen and have structures more diverse than organic ones. Some of the common types of compounds include carbides, oxides, sulfides, cyanides, nitrides, acetylides, thiocyanates, selenocyanates, tellurides, and chlorides.
