Study Notes
Maintaining a Car Battery
- Car batteries are kept charged by a dynamo while the car is running.
- The dynamo acts as a charger when the engine is running.
Creating a Closed Circuit
- A closed circuit is created when a conductive connection is made from the battery to a device (like the rear window defroster) and back to the battery.
- This allows current to flow through the device.
Switches
- Various types of switches are found in cars, including standard switches and push switches.
- Some parts of the car system may turn on and off automatically.
Current Direction
- Car batteries provide direct current (DC).
- Current flows from the positive terminal of the voltage source to the negative terminal.
- Diodes are semiconductor devices that allow current flow in only one direction.
LEDs
- LEDs (light-emitting diodes) are diodes that produce light.
- LEDs have longer and shorter leads to ensure proper polarity in a circuit.
- Connecting the longer lead to the positive terminal and the shorter to the negative terminal allows for correct current flow.
Capacity
- Car batteries have a limited capacity for delivering electrical energy.
- Battery capacity is measured in ampere-hours (Ah).
- The capacity of a battery is the product of current and time.
- The formula for battery capacity is: C = I x t, where:
- C is the capacity in Ah
- I is the current in A
- t is the operating time in hours (h)
- Batteries used in devices have smaller capacities and are measured in milliampere-hours (mAh).
Example Exercise 1
- The exercise calculates the current (I) through a reading lamp given its battery capacity (C) and operating time (t).
- The solution uses the formula: I = C / t.
Electrical Power
- Electrical power is the amount of electrical energy consumed per second.
- Electrical power is proportional to voltage and current.
- The formula for electrical power is: P = U x I, where:
- P is the electrical power in watts (W)
- U is the voltage in volts (V)
- I is the current in amperes (A)
- The formula for electrical power can be used in conjunction with the formula E = P x t to calculate energy consumption.
Example Exercise 2
- The example calculates the electrical energy consumed by a computer fan in one minute.
- First, power (P) is calculated using P = U x I.
- Then, energy (E) is calculated using E = P x t.
