    Overview of Canberra

Founded in 1913, Canberra is Australia's capital city and home to approximately 507,617 people. It is located between Sydney and Melbourne and known for its wide streets, sprawling parks, and modern architecture. Due to its well-planned design, it has been named one of the top three planned cities around the globe. As such, it attracts many tourists each year, with 1.7 million visitors recorded in 2012 alone.

    History and Development

The establishment of Canberra was a deliberate move by both the Australian Government and King George V to create a place where they could peacefully coexist. Initially, the site chosen for the new capital was Yarralumla, which had been owned by two brothers from New South Wales since the late eighteenth century. However, this location proved unsuitable due to its proximity to Sydney, so alternative sites were sought out until a permanent site was established near Yass.

In terms of development, Canberra became a township only after World War I when the Australians returned home with their experiences of organised warfare fresh in their minds. Up until this point, there had been little commitment towards any kind of planning or building projects within the area. Nevertheless, following the conflict, a grand plan for creating a well-organized layout for all future buildings in what would become Canberra began to take shape.

    Geography and Attractions

One notable feature of Canberra is Lake Burley Griffin, which serves as the central focus of the city. Surrounding this body of water you will find some major attractions including Parliament House, Old Parliament House, the National Gallery, the National Library, the High Court, Questacon, Royal Military College Duntroon, Jerrabomberra Wetlands, Casuarina Sands Nature Reserve, Capital Hill Observatory, and Mount Ainslie. These landmarks make up part of the cultural history that defines Canberra today. Additionally, numerous embassy residences line the shores of Lake Burley Griffin, providing ample opportunity for diplomatic meetings amongst foreign dignitaries who come through Canberra regularly.

Overall, Canberra remains an important hub within Australia for political activities and international relations alike. Its unique blend of diverse culture combined with organized planning makes it stand out among other cities throughout the country.
