Work Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)

Investigating Health and Safety Concerns

• Steps must be taken to investigate potential health or safety concerns with equipment, machinery, or devices as soon as possible.

Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA)

• The purpose of PHIPA is to protect the privacy and confidentiality of personal health information.
• Healthcare providers, hospitals, and other organizations may have a legitimate need to access personal health information under PHIPA.

Privacy Act, 1990

• The focus of the Privacy Act is to ensure individuals have access to their personal information, and can correct inaccurate information.

Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)

• PIPEDA addresses the collection, storage, and use of personal information by private sector organizations.
• Organizations must inform consumers about the collection of their personal information, and obtain consent.
• Organizations covered by PIPEDA include businesses, charities, and other private sector entities.
• The Privacy Commissioner of Canada has the authority to investigate complaints regarding privacy issues under PIPEDA.

Providing Information to Workers under WHMIS

• Information on hazardous materials is provided to workers under WHMIS through three ways: Safety Data Sheets (SDS), labels, and worker training.
