News Writing
- News is information about current events printed in newspapers or broadcast by the media.
- Elements of news include:
- Timeliness
- Proximity
- Significance
- Prominence
- Oddity
- Conflict
- Progress
Types of Leads
- Straight Lead: focuses on one or a few of the six question words (5Ws and H) and gets straight to the point.
- Novelty Lead: used in writing news features, attracts attention, and carries out a definite purpose.
Writing a Lead
- Pack the most important information in one sentence.
- Go direct to the point.
- Rarely use the “when” and “where” leads.
- Use less than 30 words.
- Avoid starting with articles: A, an, the.
- Do not mention names unless the person is well-known.
Body of the Article
- The details of the lead, arranged from most to least important.
- One sentence, one paragraph rule.
- Sentences are generally less than 25 words.
- Include quotations from at least two different people.
Tips for Writing a News Article
- Make sure that your facts are accurate.
- Keep your sentences short.
- Use the S-V-O formula.
- Always use active voice.
