- James Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill in 1848, sparking the California Gold Rush.
- This period saw a massive migration of hundreds of thousands of people to California between 1848 and 1855.
The 49ers
- Before the gold rush, less than 1,000 non-Native Americans lived in California.
- By 1849, this number surged to more than 100,000.
- The population went to over 300,000 in a few years, making it the largest mass migration in U.S. history.
- People who moved during this time are called 49ers, given most migrated in 1849.
- They came from around the world for gold and to create businesses servicing prospectors.
- Prospectors used panning, washing gravel to find gold.
- Unfortunately, the growing non-Native American population coincided with a severe decline in the Native American population due to disease, accidents and violence.
- The Native American population decreased by at least 100,000 in less than 20 years.
- Many prospectors didn't get rich but businesses that supplied them thrived.
- Levi Strauss's shift to sturdy pants for miners led to the creation of Levi's jeans.
Booming Ghost Towns
- Towns, called boomtowns, sprang up around new gold finds, quickly growing.
- Some boomtowns, like San Francisco, survived.
- Others were abandoned as the gold ran out and prospectors moved on.
- These abandoned towns and the occasional ghost town are tourist attractions today.
- Other gold rushes occurred in the US (Colorado, North Carolina, Alaska.)
