Study Notes
AP Capstone Plagiarism and Falsification Policy
- Students who fail to cite all sources in their academic work will receive a score of 0 for that component of the AP Capstone program.
- Teams in AP Seminar will receive a score of 0 on the team project and presentation if they fail to cite their sources.
- Students who falsify information (e.g., data, evidence, sources) will receive a score of 0 for that component of the AP Seminar and/or AP Research performance task.
- Teams in AP Seminar will receive a score of 0 on the team project and presentation if any portion of their project contains falsified information.
AP Capstone Policy on the Use of Generative AI
- Generative AI tools are based on predictive technology that produces content such as text, images, audio, and video.
- These technologies include large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, as well as writing assistant plugins.
- Generative AI tools are different from other AI-based tools that focus on specific tasks, such as grammar checkers.
- Generative AI tools must be used ethically and responsibly to support student learning and not to bypass it.
- Students must complete all AP Capstone work themselves, regardless of whether they use generative AI tools as additional aids for their learning (which is optional).
- AI tools can be used as aids for exploring potential topics of inquiry, conducting initial source searches, clarifying complex texts, or checking grammar and tone.
- In all instances, students must directly engage with primary and secondary sources, conduct their own analysis and synthesis of evidence, and make their own choices regarding how to communicate effectively.
- Students are also responsible for using credible and valid sources, and for integrating diverse perspectives into their work.
Acceptable vs. Unacceptable Use of AI in AP Capstone
- Exploring Ideas: AI can help students explore existing debates, potential subtopics, and general information about a topic.
- Finding Sources: AI tools can be used by students to locate authors, organizations, publications, and sources that are pertinent to their area of inquiry.
- Summarizing and Interpreting Sources: AI can help students understand complex language in their sources but students should always read the original text to ensure that their understanding of the source is accurate.
- Synthesizing Ideas: It is not acceptable to use generative AI to synthesize information from a body of sources.
- Developing a Research Method (AP Research): AI can be used to summarize commonly used methods, but it is unacceptable to use it to select methods for a student's research.
- Data Production, Summarization, and Interpretation (AP Research): It is not acceptable to use AI to generate data, to summarize data, or to interpret their results.
- Developing Data Displays (AP Research): AI can be used to create charts and graphs from data that students have collected and assembled.
- Drafting and Outlining a Paper: No acceptable use of AI.
- Revising a Paper: It is acceptable to use spell and grammar checkers, and to seek feedback on style and tone.
- Creating Citations and Bibliographies: AI can be used to check the format of citations and bibliographies but it is not acceptable to use AI tools to generate citations without having directly studied the original source.
- Developing Presentations: AI can be used to find general advice about presentations and potential key points.
- Oral Defense: It is not acceptable to use generative AI to generate answers to potential oral defense questions.
Required Checkpoints and Attestations
- Students are required to complete checkpoints with their teacher to ensure that they are not using generative AI to bypass the requirements of the course.
- Students must complete all relevant checkpoints in order to receive a score for their work.
- Teachers must attest to the authenticity of student work based on those checkpoints.
- Students who fail to complete the checkpoints will receive a score of 0 on those assigned components.
- In AP Seminar, these checkpoints will be in the form of short conversation with students during which students demonstrate their thinking and decision-making processes.
- Checkpoints will be held during the sources and research phase and during the argument outline phase for the IWA.
