Study Notes
- BPM stands for Business Process Management
Why BPM?
- An example of why BPM is important is the production of a pin
- The steps to produce a pin include drawing out wire, straightening the wire, cutting the wire, pointing the wire, grinding wire, making the head, putting the head on, whitening the pin and putting the pin in paper
- These processes must be integrated and scheduled otherwise a "pin" will not be produced
- Information systems provide the individual steps to complete the process and coordinate between these steps
Business Process Definitions
- Definition 1: A business process consists of coordinated activities in an organizational and technical environment that jointly realize a business goal
- These processes are enacted by a single organization but may interact with processes performed by other organizations
- Definition 2: Business process management includes concepts, methods, and techniques to support the design, administration, configuration, enactment, and analysis of business processes
- Definition 3: Business process management includes methods, techniques, and tools to identify, discover, analyze, redesign, execute, and monitor business processes to optimize performance
Core Concepts of Business Process Management
- Business process management is based on the observation that each product created by a company comes from multiple activities
- Business processes are key to organizing activities and improving the understanding of their interrelationships
- Companies can reach goals effectively if people and enterprise resources work well together
- Business processes facilitate effective collaboration
Software and Business Process Management
- The software community aims to provide robust and scalable software systems
- Because business processes exist in complex IT environments, the integration of existing information systems is important to the technical realization of business processes
Ordering Processes
- Reseller companies have an ordering process that includes steps to check, send, receive, ship, and archive
- Buyers have an ordering process that includes steps to place an order, receive, settle, and receive products
Interacting Business Processes
- Ordering processes often involve interacting with other businesses or business processes
- Graphical representations of business processes tend to focus on process structure and interactions between parties, rather than technical aspects
- Defining business processes and their interaction behavior does not dictate specific implementation strategies or platforms
Traditional Ordering Processes
- Traditional ordering methods not supported by information systems are captured by business process interaction
- An example is when a buyer browses a reseller's catalog, selects products, sends a postcard to the reseller, and the reseller sends the products and invoice, and processes are completed once payment is sent and received
Ordering Processes in Software Systems
- Software systems can implement ordering processes
- Buyers may use a web browser to search a reseller's online catalog, fill a shopping basket, provide address and billing information and press the submit button
- Pressing "submit" submits the order, and fulfills the buyer to the seller message flow
- The buyer's web browser sends a message to the reseller's web server, which calls a software module which places the order in the reseller's ordering system
- Sending products and invoicing/billing can be completed through software systems for intangible goods such as music or software
