Building Safety: Prevention

• Forgotten items in high-traffic areas can cause accidents, but these can be prevented by following rules and using common sense.

Preventing Slip and Fall Hazards

• When the floor is wet in the Reception area, place a 'WET FLOOR' sign in a prominent location.
• Ensure floor signs are visible to prevent accidents.

Preventing Trip and Fall Hazards

• Keep hallways and doorways clear of clutter to prevent tripping.
• Garbages/Recyclables cannot be stored temporarily in hallways until the end of the shift.
• Mop buckets must be stored in the Janitor's Cubby and only pulled out for cleanups.
• Food carts should be stored in the Food Room, not in front of Electrical or Oxygen Closets.
• Receiving areas need to be kept clear with full access to Electrical and Oxygen Closets.
• Food orders received must be stored in the orange floor area.
• Lights must be turned on when going up or down stairs.

Preventing Fire Hazards

• Electric wall heaters need to be kept open and free of items in front of them.
• Fire extinguishers must be checked monthly for charge, pin in place, and securely attached by an employee.
• Inspection tags must be completed after fire extinguisher checks.
• Annual inspections of fire extinguishers are performed by certified inspectors (e.g. Don Brenton's).
• Extension cords are only allowed for short-term use.
