Study Notes
Chordata - Introduction
- Uttaranchal Open University's BSc Zoology course includes a unit on Chordata, which is divided into 10 units
- The course has a team of experts, including Prof. B.D. Joshi, Dr. H.C. Bisht, and Dr. Shyam S. Kunjwal, among others
Cephalodiscus and Planctosphairoidea
- Cephalodiscus is a class of Hemichordata with U-shaped alimentary canal in larvae
- Planctosphairoidea is another class of Hemichordata, known only by a round transparent pelagic larva related to tornaria larva
Graptalita
- Graptalita is a fossil class of Hemichordata
- They are extinct, colonial hemichordates with tubular chitinous skeleton and colonial habits, showing an affinity with Rhobdopleura
Type Study and Affinity - Balanoglossus (Tongue Worm)
- Balanoglossus is a marine, tubicolous or burrowing hemichordate, inhabiting shallow coastal waters of intertidal zone
- It has a U-shaped tube or burrow with two vertical limbs, with the anterior opening being funnel-shaped and the posterior end being rounded and concealed below the spirally coiled faecal matter
- Balanoglossus is an ocean-dwelling acorn worm (Enteropneusta) genus, with great zoological interest due to its evolutionary link between invertebrates and vertebrates
Herdmania - General Study
- Herdmania is a genus of Urochordata, with Megascleres occurring throughout the body, except in the heart
- The aperture of siphons in Herdmania is guarded by 1 lip
- True coelom in Herdmania is greatly reduced due to the development of the atrium
- Intestine in Herdmania is U-shaped
- Respiration in Urochordates occurs through the test and gill slits
Cephalochordata - Introduction
- Cephalochordata is a subphylum of Chordata, characterized by the presence of a notochord that extends into the head
- Lancelets are blade-shaped, yielding the name amphioxus, which comes from the Greek for "both (ends) pointed"
- Cephalochordates play a key role in food chains and are harvested commercially for food in Asia
- There are only two genera of cephalochordates recognized: Branchiostoma (about 23 species) and Asymmetron (about six species)
Cephalochordata - Digestive System
- Amphioxus has oral cirri, which are thin tentacle-like strands that hang in front of the mouth and act as sensory devices and filters for the water passing into the body
- Water passes from the mouth into the large pharynx, which is lined by numerous gill-slits
- The ventral surface of the pharynx contains a groove called the endostyle, which is connected to Hatschek's pit and produces a film of mucus
- The mucus traps suspended food particles and is collected in a second, dorsal, groove, and passed back to the rest of the digestive tract
