Population of Brooke's Point

According to the 2015 census, the population of Brooke's Point was 66,374. However, based on the 2007 census, the estimated population was 58,537. These figures highlight the growth and development that Brooke's Point has experienced over time.

History of Brooke's Point

Brooke's Point was officially recognized as a municipality on June 28, 1949, when it was created by virtue of Executive Order No. 232 signed by President Elpidio Quirino. Prior to its formal establishment, the settlement was known as Bonbon, which might have been derived from the Palaweno term for a type of tree found in the area. The current name of the town honors Sir James Brooke, the Englishman who served as the governor of Sarawak, Borneo, in the 1830s. It is believed that Brooke visited the region and engaged in trading activities with the locals.

Under American rule, the place was named Brooke's Point, and many consider this naming practice as an expression of 'white worship' or a reflection of colonial mentality. Some municipal officials have advocated for returning to the original name of Bonbon.

Location of Brooke's Point

Brooke's Point is a coastal municipality situated in the southern part of Palawan Island in the western Philippines. Its neighbors include Quezon to the north, Sofronio Espanola to the northeast, Balataza to the southwest, and Rizal to the west. The town covers approximately 1,303.40 square kilometers (503.25 square miles).
