The current name of the town honors Sir James Brooke, the Englishman who served as the governor of Sarawak, Borneo, in the 1830s. Under American rule, the place was named Brooke's Point, and many consider this naming practice as an expression of 'white worship' or a reflection of colonial mentality. Some municipal officials have advocated for returning to the original name of Bonbon.
