Bronchial Asthma

A medical condition where airways narrow, caused by reactions to triggers.

Extrinsic Asthma

Asthma triggered by allergens, often starting in childhood.

Intrinsic Asthma

Asthma not linked to allergies, often appearing in adults.

Study Notes

Bronchial Asthma Symptoms

  • Coughing and expectoration of white viscous sputum
  • Inability to speak
  • Chest tightness
  • Bradycardia
  • Hyperinflation of thorax, voluntary at first to dilate airways; secondarily as a result of incomplete emptying
  • Markedly reduced FEV1 (forced expiratory volume)
  • Attacks typically last from a few minutes to several hours and are often associated with exercise or sleep.
  • Palpation and percussion are usually normal although the chest can be hyper resonant.
  • On auscultation, diffuse expiratory wheezes with an increased expiratory time are often heard.
