    Study Notes

    What is Broadband?

    • Broadband is an always-on data connection that supports interactive services, including internet access.
    • It has a minimum download speed of 512 kbps to an individual subscriber from the point of presence (POP) of the service provider.
    • Interactive services exclude those that require a separate license, such as real-time voice transmission, except as permitted under ISP licenses with internet telephony.

    Advantages of Broadband

    • Always-on connection (not shared media)
    • Fast (> 512 kbps)
    • No disconnection
    • No additional access charge
    • Telephone and data services can be used simultaneously

    Wired Broadband Technologies

    • Multiple types of broadband access technologies can compete to provide similar services to consumers and businesses.
    • Examples include 100-location managed IP and MPLS networks using MPLS-enabled routers.

    Objectives of NIB-II

    • NIB-II is a mission to build world-class infrastructure that accelerates the internet revolution in India.
    • It provides diversified internet access services, including support for VPN (Layer-2, Layer-3, and Dialup) and broadband services.
    • It offers SLA reports, including security, QoS, and any-to-any connectivity.
    • It offers fully managed services to customers, including bandwidth on demand.
    • The network is capable of online measurement and monitoring of network parameters such as latency, packet loss, jitter, and availability.

    Broadband Multiplay

    • Broadband Multiplay is a triple-play service that provides the following services to customers:
      • Data (Internet)
      • Voice (VoIP)
      • Video (IPTV, VoD, or live broadcast and stored broadcasting using video streaming protocols)

    Components of Broadband Multiplay Project

    • L3PE (MCR/PE Router of NIB-2 Project 1)
    • BNG (Broadband Network Gateway)
    • RPR Tier-1 Switch
    • RPR Tier-2 Switch
    • OC LAN Tier-2 Switch
    • DSLAM
    • DSL Tester
    • Installation-related material

    Features of Broadband Multiplay

    • Provides voice, data, and streaming video services
    • Maximum download speed can go up to 24 Mbps
    • On-demand services like Audio on Demand (AoD), Games on Demand (GoD), Video on Demand (VoD), Video Conferencing, and IPTV can be easily planned through Multiplay Broadband.

    Broadband Overview

    • Few users of available broadband networks prefer slower, but cheaper options using older technologies like conventional dial-up telephone networks.
    • Existing wired and wireless telephone networks can combine analog, voice services, with digital, data services through retrofitting.
    • Cable television networks can add data and telephone services to existing video offerings.
    • Subscribers of these broadband services enjoy reliable and user-friendly access to a broad array of services.

    What is Broadband?

    • TRAI defines Broadband as an always-on data connection that supports interactive services including internet access with a minimum download speed of 512 kbps.
    • The connection is from the point of presence (POP) of the service provider to an individual subscriber.
    • Multiple individual broadband connections are aggregated, and the subscriber can access interactive services including the internet through this POP.

    Advantages of Broadband

    • Always on (not shared media)
    • Fast (> 512 kbps)
    • No disconnection
    • No additional access charge
    • Telephone and Data simultaneously

    Wired Broadband Technologies

    • Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)
    • Cable Modem (CM)
    • Power Line Broadband (BPL)
    • Fiber technology

    Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)

    • DSL is a wireline transmission technology that brings data and information faster over copper telephone lines.
    • Traditional phone service connects homes or businesses to a telephone company office via copper wires.
    • A DSL modem accesses the local telephone company's central office where a DSL Access DSLAM then transmits the signal from the copper telephone line onto a network backbone, and eventually to the Internet.

    DSL Transmission Technologies

    • Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL)
      • Used for business applications like video conferencing
      • Equal data rate in both directions (upstream and downstream)
    • Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL)
      • Used primarily by residential users who receive a lot of data but do not send much
      • Faster speed in a downstream direction (from the telephone central office to the customer's premises) than upstream

    ADSL Standards

    • ADSL: 640 kbps upstream, 8 Mbps downstream, 5.5 Km maximum range
    • ADSL2: 1-1.5 Mbps upstream, 12-16 Mbps downstream, 5.7 Km maximum range
    • ADSL2+: 1 Mbps upstream, 26 Mbps downstream, 5.7 Km maximum range

    BSNL's Broadband Access Technology

    • BSNL uses Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) Technology for providing broadband connections.
    • Customer needs:
      • BSNL's Landline connection
      • Computer with 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Card
      • DSL Modem + Splitter (CPE)

    • Total 12 routers ordered for Metro Ethernet project
    • 2 routers each at 6 locations for Metro Ethernet project

    Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)

    • DSL is a wire line transmission technology that brings data and information faster over copper telephone lines already installed in homes and businesses.
    • A DSL modem accesses the local telephone company's central office where a DSL Access DSLAM then transmits the signal from the copper telephone line onto a network backbone, and eventually to the Internet.
    • With high-speed Internet access that uses DSL transmission technology, there is no need to "dial in" to a traditional modem, allowing for an "always-on" dedicated connection to the Internet.

    Types of DSL Transmission Technologies

    • Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL): used typically for business applications such as video conferencing, where the data rate in both directions is equal.
    • Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL): used primarily by residential users who receive a lot of data but do not send much, providing faster speed in a downstream direction (from the telephone central office to the customer's premises) than upstream.

    Content-Based Services

    • Video on Demand (VoD) and Audio on Demand (AoD) are examples of content-based services.
    • BSNL Web Conferencing Service enables virtual meetings with business partners, suppliers, employers, etc. with features such as Persistent meeting rooms and data conferencing tools.
