Flashcards
What is the Brier Score?
What is the Brier Score?
A statistical measure that evaluates the accuracy of predictions, especially in binary outcomes like wins or losses. It calculates the squared difference between the predicted probability of an outcome and the actual outcome, averaging these differences across multiple predictions.
What does the Brier Score tell us?
What does the Brier Score tell us?
It measures the average squared difference between the predicted probabilities of outcomes and the actual outcomes. A lower Brier Score indicates a more accurate prediction.
How is the Brier Score calculated?
How is the Brier Score calculated?
It is calculated for individual games or events, and then averaged across multiple games to get an overall accuracy measure.

Study Notes
Brier Score
- A method to evaluate the accuracy of prediction models, particularly useful for evaluating bookmakers' predictions.
- Developed in 1950 by Glenn Brier, originally used in weather forecasting.
- Measures the difference between predicted probability and actual outcome.
Two-Outcome Games
- Example: Win or loss for a team.
- Perfect prediction: Brier Score of 0.
- Completely wrong prediction: Brier Score of 2.
- Random guess: Brier Score of 0.5 (for a two-outcome event).
Calculating the Brier Score
- Calculate the difference between the actual outcome and predicted probability for each outcome.
- Square the difference for each outcome.
- For each game, sum the squared differences.
- The average of these values across all games is the overall Brier Score.
Example Use Cases
- Sports: Evaluate bookmakers' predictions for the probability of a win or loss in a game.
- Weather Forecasting: Determine the accuracy of weather predictions.
- Other Prediction Tasks: Assess the accuracy of a variety of prediction models.
Brier Score Interpretation
- Low Brier Scores indicate greater accuracy.
- High Brier Scores indicate lower accuracy.
- Compare to the Brier Score of a random guess (0.5 for 2 outcomes, higher for more outcomes) to evaluate actual predictions.
Multiple Outcomes
- When more than two outcomes are possible, the calculation is the same, but consider the various probabilities and outcomes.
- The random scores will vary based on more possible outcomes.
Brier Scores and Randomness
- If predictions are random, the average Brier Score should be 0.5 for two outcomes, but higher for more outcomes.
Importance of Comparisons
- Brier Scores are often most useful when comparing to other scores, or a random prediction, to measure the relative accuracy of various predictions.
NHL Example
- The sample data indicated a Brier Score of ~0.589 for the NHL outcomes.
