Brick Arrangement and Characteristics
- In a Flemish bond, alternating courses of bricks are laid with headers ( bricks laid across the direction of the wall) and stretchers (bricks laid along the direction of the wall).
- Good bricks should have a uniform color, texture, and shape, with a low water absorption rate and high compressive strength.
Types of Kilns
- Clamp kilns are simple, open structures used for burning bricks in small quantities.
- Scotch kilns are rectangular, brick-lined kilns used for burning bricks on a large scale.
- Hoffman kilns are continuous, multi-chamber kilns used for burning bricks on a large, industrial scale.
- Bull's trench kilns are long, narrow kilns used for burning bricks in large quantities.
