Study Notes
Arterial Supply of the Brain
- The brain is supplied by vertebral arteries and internal carotid arteries.
Vertebral Artery
- The vertebral artery is a branch of the first part of the subclavian artery.
- The course of the vertebral artery is divided into 4 parts.
- The 4th part of the vertebral artery enters the cranial cavity through the foramen magnum.
- The two vertebral arteries approach each other and join together in the median plane at the lower border of the pons to form the basilar artery.
Basilar Artery
- The basilar artery is formed by the union of the two vertebral arteries at the lower border of the pons.
- The basilar artery ascends on the front of the pons, lodged in the basilar groove.
- The basilar artery ends at the upper border of the pons by dividing into two posterior cerebral arteries (PCA).
Branches of Vertebral Artery
- Anterior spinal artery
- Posterior spinal artery
- Medullary branches, supplying the antero-medial part of the medulla
- Posterior inferior cerebellar artery, supplying the posterior part of the inferior surface of cerebellum.
