Flashcards

Anterior inferior cerebellar artery

Supplies the anterior part of the inferior surface of the cerebellum.

Labyrinthine artery

Enters the internal acoustic meatus to supply the membranous labyrinth.

Superior cerebellar arteries

Supply the superior surface of the cerebellum.

Study Notes

Arterial Supply of the Brain

  • The brain is supplied by vertebral arteries and internal carotid arteries.

Vertebral Artery

  • The vertebral artery is a branch of the first part of the subclavian artery.
  • The course of the vertebral artery is divided into 4 parts.
  • The 4th part of the vertebral artery enters the cranial cavity through the foramen magnum.
  • The two vertebral arteries approach each other and join together in the median plane at the lower border of the pons to form the basilar artery.

Basilar Artery

  • The basilar artery is formed by the union of the two vertebral arteries at the lower border of the pons.
  • The basilar artery ascends on the front of the pons, lodged in the basilar groove.
  • The basilar artery ends at the upper border of the pons by dividing into two posterior cerebral arteries (PCA).

Branches of Vertebral Artery

  • Anterior spinal artery
  • Posterior spinal artery
  • Medullary branches, supplying the antero-medial part of the medulla
  • Posterior inferior cerebellar artery, supplying the posterior part of the inferior surface of cerebellum.
