Study Notes
Bradley Conduct of Fire Trainer (COFT)
- The Bradley Conduct of Fire Trainer (COFT) is designed for Bradley Fighting Vehicle (BFV) units to train and sustain gunnery proficiency.
- It trains crews in critical combat skills in accordance with TC 3-20.31.
- The COFT provides a Crew Training Program with special purpose, sustainment, gunnery, and combat training.
- Special Purpose training introduces crews to Bradley gunnery techniques.
- Sustainment training is for qualified crews who can re-shoot previously completed exercises.
- Gunnery training prepares crews for qualification and advanced exercises.
- Combat training allows qualified crews to utilize all gunnery systems in various combat situations.
- The COFT is a dual-configuration simulation system that replicates the Bradley ODS-SA or A3 vehicle in a synthetic environment.
System Configurations
- The COFT has three configurations: Mobile, Institutional, and Table Top Trainer (TTT).
- Each configuration includes a Crewstation, Computational System Rack (CSR), and Instructor/Operator Station (IOS) subsystem.
- The Mobile configuration additionally includes a Trailer.
- The Institutional configuration is housed in a facility with heating, ventilation, air conditioning, fire suppression, electrical power, and lighting.
- The TTT configuration uses separate transportable cases for the IOS, CSR, and gunner/commander stations.
Operational Factors
- The temperature for Mobile and Institutional configurations must be maintained between 60° and 90° F (16° and 32° C), with 20 to 70 percent relative humidity (non-condensing) during training.
- During non-training periods, the temperature should be maintained between 0° and 125° F (-18° and 52° C), with 10 to 90 percent relative humidity.
- TTT configuration temperature range is between 40° and 100° F (4° and 38° C), with 20 to 90 percent relative humidity during operation.
- Non-training periods require temperature maintenance between 25 and 125° F (-4° and 52° C), with 10 to 90 percent relative humidity.
Instructor Operator Station (IOS)
- The IOS is used to communicate with the CSR and Crewstation for system power-up, system diagnostics, training selections, training record management, and system power-down.
- The IOS software plans, controls, and archives training results and provides verbal crew communication during training.
- The Institutional and Mobile IOS configurations feature minor hardware differences.
- The Mobile configuration mounts the IOS directly to the shelter floor and side wall and includes a generator gauge near it.
Crewstation
- The Crewstation is a molded fiberglass representation of a BFV turret located within a steel support structure.
- Differences exist between Institutional and Mobile Crewstations (the former has side panels).
- The TTT configuration uses transportable cases for crew controls.
- Simulated sounds and noises of vehicle operations in combat are used within the Crewstation.
Commander's Station
- The Commander can view three periscopes: Remote Biocular Display, Commander's Smart Display, or backup sight.
- The station includes a Commander's Sight Control Panel, Commander's Data Entry Tool, Commander's Hand Station, simulated coax, and intercom.
Gunner's Station
- The Gunner can view Improved Bradley Acquisition System (IBAS) FLIR/TV biocular and DVO sights, which provide gunner’s perspective to the IOS monitor.
- The Gunner's station is similar to the other stations in having controls and displays.
- The Gunner's station on the TTT has limited functionality for manual turret azimuth and gun elevation.
Computational System Rack (CSR)
- The CSR connects the Crewstation and IOS.
- It includes components for vehicle simulation, Image Generation, Semi-Automated Forces (SAF), database software, and workstations to host instructor software.
- Identical configurations for Institutional and Mobile COFT.
- TTT configuration contains necessary components for simulated gunnery.
Emergency Power Off (EPO) Switches
- The COFT system has EPO switches at each personnel entry.
- They are located at the personnel doors of the trailer in the mobile configuration and classroom areas of the institutional configuration.
- Selecting an EPO switch will disconnect power from the electrical power distribution unit (EPDU).
Fire Protection Equipment
- The COFT system has fire protection equipment, including smoke alarms.
- Facilities include independent fire detection, suppression infrastructure, emergency lighting, and fire extinguishers.
Laser Printer
- The laser printer outputs exercise results and crew records.
- It is present in both mobile and institutional configurations.
Inkjet Printer
- The inkjet printer produces hardcopy outputs for exercises and crew records.
- The TTT configuration has this printer.
LCD Monitor
- The LCD monitor displays what the crew members (Gunner, Commander) are currently viewing.
- The IO uses this to monitor crew performance and maintain the vehicle's operational status.
Situation Monitor
- A touch screen display used to monitor various aspects of the COFT by the IO.
- It displays menus to adjust or control function settings like brightness, contrasts, volume, display selections, and other functions.
IOS Control Panel
- The IOS Control Panel is used by the IO to start/stop the simulator and adjust audio communication.
- It has many different controls to manage all of the equipment for training.
TTT IOS Control Panel
- This is the IOS control panel for the TTT configuration.
- It has similar controls, which manage the simulator, view, and communications functions.
