Study Notes
Brachial Plexus
- The brachial plexus is formed by the ventral primary rami of C5, C6, C7, C8, and T1.
- The branches from the roots supply muscles that join the trunk to the pectoral girdle.
Branches from Roots
- Dorsal scapular nerve (C5)
- Long thoracic nerve (C5-C7)
- The long thoracic nerve is vulnerable to injury during radical mastectomy or traumatic injury due to its superficial location on the serratus anterior muscle.
Trunks
- The three trunks are formed by the union of the posterior divisions of all three trunks.
Divisions and Branches
- The upper subscapular nerve (C5, C6) supplies the subscapularis.
- The middle subscapular (thoracodorsal) nerve (C6, C7, C8) supplies the latissimus dorsi.
- The lower subscapular nerve (C6, C7) supplies the subscapularis and teres major.
- The axillary nerve is a terminal branch.
- The radial nerve is a terminal branch.
- The musculocutaneous nerve (C5-C7) is another branch.
