Bowel Obstruction
Causes of Bowel Obstruction
Intussusception
- Telescoping of one part of the intestine into another
- Most common cause of bowel obstruction in children
- Can occur at any age, but most common in children under 3 years old
- Symptoms: abdominal pain, vomiting, bloody stools
- Treatment: air or barium enema to reduce the intussusception, surgery if necessary
Volvulus
- Twisting of the intestine, cutting off blood flow
- Can occur at any age, but more common in adults
- Symptoms: severe abdominal pain, vomiting, abdominal distension
- Treatment: surgery to untwist the intestine and restore blood flow
Hernia
- Protrusion of the intestine through a weakened area of the abdominal wall
- Can cause bowel obstruction if the intestine becomes trapped
- Symptoms: abdominal pain, vomiting, abdominal distension
- Treatment: surgery to repair the hernia and relieve the obstruction
Adhesions
- Bands of fibrous tissue that form between the intestine and other organs
- Can cause bowel obstruction by kinking or twisting the intestine
- Symptoms: abdominal pain, vomiting, abdominal distension
- Treatment: surgery to lyse the adhesions and relieve the obstruction
Treatment Options
-
Conservative Management
- Fluid and electrolyte replacement
- Nasogastric suction to decompress the stomach
- Medication to manage symptoms
-
Surgical Intervention
- Laparoscopic or open surgery to relieve the obstruction
- May involve bowel resection or bypass
- Goal is to restore intestinal function and alleviate symptoms
-
Endoscopic Intervention
- May be used to relieve obstruction caused by colon cancer or inflammatory bowel disease
- Involves using an endoscope to remove blockages or tumors
