Study Notes
Bone Classification
- Bones can be classified by shape, region, and structure.
- Shape: Long, short, flat, irregular, and sesamoid
- Region: Axial (bones of the midline and trunk) and appendicular (bones of the limbs, including the girdles)
- Axial skeleton is green, appendicular skeleton is pink.
Skeletal System
- The skeletal system is made up of bones & cartilage, joined together by joints.
Bone
- Bone is a special type of connective tissue with a calcified matrix.
- It consists of cells, fibers, and a matrix.
Bone Functions
- Support: Provides framework for the body
- Protection: Protects vital organs
- Movement: Allows for movement with muscles
- Storage of Minerals: Stores calcium and phosphorus
- Production of blood cells: Red bone marrow produces blood cells
Vertebrae
- Vertebrae are bones of the spine.
- There are 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 fused sacral, and 4 fused coccygeal vertebrae.
- Each vertebra has a body (anteriorly), a vertebral arch (posteriorly) made up of pedicles & laminae, transverse processes (laterally), and spinous processes (posteriorly).
Sacrum & Coccyx
- The sacrum is formed by 5 fused vertebrae.
- The coccyx is formed by 4 fused vertebrae.
Thoracic Cage
- The thoracic cage is formed by the sternum and ribs.
