Study Notes

Body Cavities and Organs

  • The cranial cavity houses the brain.
  • The spinal cavity contains the spinal cord.
  • The thoracic cavity includes the heart and lungs.
  • The abdominal cavity features the pancreas, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and liver.
  • The pelvic cavity contains the bladder, uterus, and ovaries.

Body Cavities Classification

  • Dorsal (posterior) cavities are the cranial and spinal cavities.
  • Anterior (ventral) cavities consist of the thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic.

Anatomical Planes

  • The sagittal plane divides the body into equal right and left halves.
  • The coronal plane separates the body into front (anterior) and back (posterior) halves.
  • The transverse plane divides the body into top (superior) and bottom (inferior) halves.

Directional Terms

  • Cranial refers to the direction toward the head.
  • Caudal indicates the direction toward the feet.
  • Superior means above or upper.
  • Inferior signifies below or lower.
  • Anterior (ventral) implies the front of the body.
  • Posterior (dorsal) denotes the back of the body.
  • Medial means toward the midline of the body.
  • Lateral refers to away from the midline or body.
  • Proximal indicates closer to the trunk.
  • Distal means farther from the trunk.

Abdominal Regions

  • The three top abdominal regions are the right hypochondriac, left hypochondriac, and epigastric.
  • The three middle abdominal regions consist of the right lumbar, left lumbar, and umbilical.
  • The three lower abdominal regions are the right iliac, left iliac, and hypogastric.

Tissue and Membranes

  • Four main tissue types are epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue.
  • Two primary membrane types are mucous and serous.
  • Epithelial (serous) membranes include parietal (lining the cavity) and visceral (covering the organ).

Functions of Membranes

  • Mucous membranes are located in the digestive, urinary, and respiratory tracts, serving to lubricate and protect.
  • Serous fluid is contained within double-walled membranes lining closed body cavities.

Healing and Anatomy

  • A superficial cut is an incision on the skin without infection.
  • Epithelization is the healing process for large open wounds.
  • Scar tissue is referred to as connective tissue.
  • Anatomy is the study of the shape and structure of an organism's body.
  • Physiology is the study of how an organism's body functions.
