Body Positions and Cavities

  • Anatomic position is when a person is upright, with arms at the side, face forward, palms forward, and toes forward.
  • Prone position is when a person is lying face down, while supine position is when a person is lying face up.
  • Directional terms include superior (up) vs inferior (down), anterior (front) vs posterior (back), and medial (midline of the body) vs lateral (off to the side).
  • Proximal means close to the point of attachment, while distal means far from the point of attachment.
  • Cranial means towards the head, while caudal means towards the tail.
  • Body planes include sagittal (divides the body into left and right parts), frontal/coronal (divides the body into front and back), and transverse/horizontal (divides the body into superior and inferior parts).
  • Regional terms include abdominal, axillary, brachial, cephalic, cervical, femoral, inguinal, oral, orbital, patellar, pedal, sternal, umbilical, and popliteal.
  • The body has two main cavities: the dorsal cavity (located towards the back of the body) and the ventral cavity (located towards the front of the body).
  • The dorsal cavity has two divisions: the cranial cavity (contains the brain) and the spinal cavity (contains the spinal cord).
  • The ventral cavity is divided by the diaphragm muscle and contains the thoracic cavity (heart and lungs) and the abdominal pelvic cavity (organs such as the bladder, uterus, and rectum).
  • The thoracic cavity is located above the diaphragm and is surrounded by the rib cage. It contains the heart and lungs.
  • The abdominopelvic cavity is located below the diaphragm and contains organs such as the stomach, liver, pancreas, kidneys, and intestines.
