Flashcards

Pericardium

A serous membrane that surrounds the heart, consisting of two layers: the inner visceral pericardium and the outer parietal pericardium.

Pericardial Cavity

The space between the visceral and parietal pericardium, filled with a lubricating fluid.

Abdominal Pelvic Cavity

The main cavity in the lower part of the body, located below the diaphragm, containing the abdominal and pelvic cavities.

Peritoneum

A serous membrane lining the abdominal cavity, comprised of the inner visceral peritoneum covering organs and the outer parietal peritoneum lining the abdominal wall.

Study Notes

Body Cavities

  • Body cavities are spaces within the body that house organs.
  • Two main body cavities: dorsal and ventral.

Dorsal Cavity

  • Located in the back (posterior) of the body.
  • Subdivided into cranial and spinal cavities.

Cranial Cavity

  • Superior portion of the dorsal cavity.
  • Enclosed by the cranium (skull).
  • Houses the brain.
  • Contains cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for protection and cushioning.
  • Lined with three-layered meninges: dura mater (outermost), arachnoid (middle), and pia mater (innermost, adheres to the brain).
  • CSF located in subarachnoid space between arachnoid and pia mater.

Spinal Cavity

  • Also known as the vertebral cavity.
  • Inferior portion of the dorsal cavity.
  • Continuous with the cranial cavity.
  • Enclosed by the vertebral column (spine).
  • Houses the spinal cord.
  • Contains CSF for protection.
  • Lined by meninges.

Ventral Cavity

  • Located in the front (anterior) of the body.
  • Divided into thoracic and abdominal pelvic cavities.
  • Diaphragm separates thoracic and abdominal pelvic cavities.

Thoracic Cavity

  • Located in the chest.
  • Superior portion of the ventral cavity, above the diaphragm.
  • Enclosed by rib cage, vertebral column, and sternum.
  • Contains major organs: heart, lungs, trachea, esophagus, and major blood vessels.
  • Lined by serous membranes.

Pleural Cavities

  • Two pleural cavities (right and left) within the thoracic cavity.
  • Surround the lungs.
  • Contain pleural fluid for lubrication.
  • Lined by pleura:
    • Visceral pleura: inner layer, covering the lungs.
    • Parietal pleura: outer layer, lining the chest wall.
  • Pleural cavity: space between visceral and parietal pleura.

Mediastinum

  • Middle portion of the thoracic cavity.
  • Contains heart, trachea, esophagus, major blood vessels, and thymus gland.
  • Lined by parietal pleura.

Pericardial Cavity

  • Located within the mediastinum.
  • Surrounds the heart.
  • Contains pericardial fluid for lubrication.
  • Lined by pericardium:
    • Visceral pericardium: inner layer, surrounding the heart.
    • Parietal pericardium: outer layer, lining the fibrous pericardium.
  • Pericardial cavity: space between visceral and parietal pericardium.
  • Enclosed by the fibrous pericardium.

Abdominal Pelvic Cavity

  • Inferior portion of the ventral cavity.
  • Located below the diaphragm.
  • Composed of abdominal and pelvic cavities.

Abdominal Cavity

  • Middle section of the ventral cavity.
  • Superior part of the abdominal pelvic cavity.
  • Enclosed by rib cage, abdominal muscles, and vertebral column.
  • Superior boundary: Diaphragm
  • Inferior boundary: an imaginary line at the pelvic inlet.
  • Contains: liver, stomach, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, and intestines.
  • Lined by peritoneum:
    • Visceral peritoneum: inner layer, covering internal organs.
    • Parietal peritoneum: outer layer, lining the abdominal wall.
  • Peritoneal cavity: space between visceral and parietal peritoneum.
  • Contains peritoneal fluid for lubrication.

Intraperitoneal Organs

  • Organs entirely covered by visceral peritoneum: liver, stomach, spleen, jejunum, ileum.

Retroperitoneal Organs

  • Organs behind the peritoneum: kidneys, adrenal glands, part of the pancreas.

Subperitoneal Organs

  • Organs below the peritoneum: bladder.

Pelvic Cavity

  • Inferior portion of the ventral cavity.
  • Enclosed by the pelvis and pelvic floor muscles.
  • Continuous with abdominal cavity superiorly at the pelvic inlet.
  • Contains: urinary bladder, reproductive organs, pelvic colon, and rectum.
  • Lined by peritoneum.
  • Subperitoneal structures, such as the bladder, are also present.
