    Blood Vascular System Lecture Notes

    • The lecture covered the blood vascular system, its components, and the structure of blood vessels.
    • The cardiovascular system transports oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.
    • Vessels involved in gas exchange are capillaries.
    • The heart, blood vessels, and connecting vessels are components of the system.

    Components of Blood Vessels

    • Arteries: Transport blood away from the heart to the body.

      • Large arteries have a thick elastic wall and wide lumen.
      • The three layers of a large artery are tunica intima, tunica media, and tunica adventitia.
      • Tunica intima has endothelium, subendothelium, and internal elastic lamina.
      • Tunica media is a thick layer with fenestrated laminae of elastic fibers separated by smooth muscle and collagenous fibers. Internal and external elastic lamina are present but not distinct.
      • Tunica adventitia is a relatively thin layer with elastic, collagen fibers, and vasa vasorum.
    • Medium-sized arteries: Have a thick wall with smooth muscle and elastic fibers in the tunica media. The external elastic lamina is usually present. The tunica adventitia is thinner than the media.

    • Medium-sized veins: Accompany the arteries of the same name; they have a thin wall with valves. The lumen is wide and usually collapsed.

    • Capillaries: Microscopic vessels connecting arteries and veins; they are formed of a single layer of endothelium resting on a basal lamina.

    • Pericytes are present in between the endothelium and the basal lamina. They contain actin, myosin, and tropomyosin and are essential for wound healing. A thin layer of reticular fibers represents the adventitia.

    General Characteristics

    • Medium-sized arteries have thick walls and narrow, rounded lumens.

    • Medium-sized veins have thin walls, valves, wide, and collapsed lumens. They accompany the medium-sized arteries.

Tunica Intima, Tunica Media, Tunica Adventitia

    • Tunica intima is the innermost thin layer; it's made of endothelium, subendothelial tissue, and internal elastic lamina.
    • Tunica media is the middle layer; it consists of smooth muscle cells, elastic fibers, and external elastic lamina.
      • In medium-sized arteries, the tunica media is thicker with extensive smooth muscle.
      • In medium-sized veins, the tunica media is thin with fewer smooth muscle cells.
    • Tunica adventitia is the outermost layer; it's made of fibrous tissue, vasa vasorum (small vessels that supply the blood vessel), and collagenous fibers.
      • In medium arteries, the tunica adventitia is thinner than the medium.
      • In medium veins, the tunica adventitia is thicker than the media.
