  • The donor's platelets can be used only if the recipient is also taking aspirin.
  • The donor's platelets can be used if the aspirin was taken more than 24 hours prior to donation.
  • The donor's platelets can be the sole source for a platelet transfusion if the recipient is not at risk for bleeding.

What is the maximum volume of whole blood (including samples) that can be collected from a donor weighing 150 pounds (approximately 68 kg), according to standard guidelines?

  • 714 mL (correct)
  • 525 mL
  • 820 mL
  • 612 mL

A blood donor reports having spent six months living in an area endemic for malaria three years ago but has had no symptoms since returning. What is the appropriate deferral period for this donor?

  • No deferral is required
  • 1-year deferral from the time of departure from the endemic area
  • 3-year deferral from the time of departure from the endemic area (correct)
  • Permanent deferral

Flashcards

Aseptic Technique

Method to prevent infections during blood collection by scrubbing the site with providine-iodine for 30 seconds.

Maximum Blood Collection

Donor blood collection limit is 10.5 mL per kg of body weight, including samples.

Donor Interval

The required waiting period of 8 weeks after whole blood donation before donating again.

Anticoagulants Expiration Times

Different anticoagulants have varying expiration times: ACD/CPD/CPD2 is 21 days, CPDA-1 is 35 days, additives are 42 days.

Study Notes

Donor Selection and Blood Collection

  • Donor Registration: Includes medical history and physical examination.
  • Aseptic Technique: Scrub the donor's site with providine-iodine for 30 seconds.
  • Blood Collection Limits: Maximum 10.5 mL of whole blood per kilogram of body weight.
  • Donor Interval: 8 weeks between blood donations.
  • Medication Evaluation: Medications taken within 48 hours that irreversibly affect platelet function (like aspirin) may not be used.

Donor Deferral

  • 1 Year Deferral: Possible exposure to Hepatitis, HIV, or malaria, Recipient of blood/blood products, Tattoo (unlesss from state facility), living with sexual contact peron with HBV or HBsAG, or symptomstic for hepititis C or other viral hepatitis. Mucous membrane exposure, Skin penetration with instruments contaminated with blood, Sexual contact with a person with viral hepatitis or high risk (confirmed+ HBsAg or HIV), history of syphilis or gonorrhea (completed therapy), travelled to malaria endemic area (more than 72 hours in a corrective institution), Asymptomatic during that time.
  • 3 Year Deferral: Possible exposure to malaria.
  • Indefinite/Permanent Deferral: Definite disease or habits associated with bloodborne pathogens (Viral hepatitis after age 11), HBV or HBsAG or HBV NAT positive, tested reactive for anti-HBc or anti-HTLV, Family history CJD or risk of vCJD.
  • Viral Disease Related Deferral: Past or present HCV, HTLV,HIV or t cruzi, Evidence of parenteral drug use, or Babesiosis.

Allogeneic Donor Selection

  • Age: 16 years or older (state law compliant, no max age limit by MD).
  • Temperature: Less than 37.5 °C or 99.5°F.
  • Blood Pressure: Must be within normal limits.
  • Hemoglobin and Hematocrit: 12.5 g/dL and ≥ 38% respectively.
  • Weight: Minimum 110 lbs or 50 kg

Blood Additives and Solutions

  • Expiration with anticoagulants: ACD/CPD/CPD2 – 21 days, CPDA-1 – 35 days, Additives – 42 days.
  • Rejuvenating solutions (ATP): Restores 2,3-DPG and ATP, can be frozen or stored at 1–6°C (must wash cells before transfusion)
