• Calvin Chai, a blackjack dealer, was working at the Big Win Casino at 3453 West Broadway in Vancouver on September 18, 2005.
• At 2:45 am, Calvin was halfway through a four-hour shift and noticed a player, Jimmy Malone, becoming agitated after losing 12 hands in a row.
• Jimmy Malone was a huge white guy who was sweating profusely, mumbling profanities, and had a tense body language.

The Break and Warning

• At 2:50 am, Calvin took a 15-minute break and was replaced by another dealer.
• During his break, Calvin shared his concerns about Jimmy with three other dealers, who warned him to be careful and suggested notifying security.
• Calvin returned to his table at 3:05 am and found that Jimmy had lost an additional $2,500.

The Confrontation

• Calvin dealt the next three hands and won, causing Jimmy to lose $250.
• Jimmy accused Calvin of cheating, and Calvin pressed a security panic button under the table.
• Jimmy lunged over the table, tackled Calvin, and hit him several times in the head, causing heavy bleeding.
