Bipolar Junction Transistors

Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJT) are types of electronic devices that amplify signals by controlling the flow of electrons through semiconductor materials. These devices are widely used in circuits due to their ability to switch and amplify electronic signals. They consist of three layers of alternating P-type and N-type doped silicon crystal, which create two pn junctions.

Structure of Bipolar Junction Transistor

A typical BJT structure includes an emitter, base, and collector. The emitter is the input region where electrons enter the transistor. The base is the control region that regulates the flow of current between the emitter and collector. Lastly, the collector captures the majority of electrons from the base.

Working Principle of Bipolar Junction Transistors

When voltage or current is applied to the base of a BJT, it either allows more electrons to pass through the base into the collector or restricts their passage. This process regulates the output across the collector-emitter junction, allowing BJTs to act as amplifiers for low power signals. They can also be used as switches by applying appropriate control signals to their bases, enabling them to control high amount of power.

Types of Bipolar Junction Transistors

There are two main types of BJTs based on the type of electricity carried by electrons:

NPN Transistors

In an NPN transistor, there are three layers of alternating P-type and N-type doped silicon crystals. Electrons will pass from the emitter into the collector when a positive voltage is applied to the base. This type of transistor is most commonly used in digital logic applications such as gates because it can handle higher power levels compared to PNP transistors.

PNP Transistors

The PNP transistor has the opposite arrangement with respect to charge carriers (electrons), where there are three layers of alternating N-type and P-type doped silicon crystals. In this case, electrons enter the collector region and exit via the emitter when a negative voltage is applied to the base.

Applications of Bipolar Junction Transistors

BJTs are crucial components in various electronic systems like audio amplifiers, electric motor control systems, switching power supplies, digital pulse shaping circuits, and current sensors. For example, they have been used extensively in medical equipment like cochlear implants and pacemakers. Furthermore, they are particularly important in radio frequency (RF) and microwave field-effect transistors (MOSFETs).
