Study Notes
The West Siberian Plain
- Largest plain in the world
- Stretches 1,600 km across and 2,400 km from north to south
- Vast frozen area in winter, and a huge marshland in summer
Biomes in Russia
- Taiga biome (coniferous forests) is the largest biome in Russia
- Taiga represents the largest forested region on Earth (approximately 12 million km²)
- Tundra biome (treeless plain) is the coldest of all the biomes
- Siberian tundra is located between 60° to 80° North latitude, and 70° to 180° East longitude
- Plants in the Siberian Tundra include fungus, grasses and shrubs growing low to the ground
The Water Cycle
- Water takes a journey between the hydrosphere, atmosphere and lithosphere
- Evaporation: Sun heats water changing it into water vapor
- Condensation: As air rises, it cools and water vapor forms clouds
- Precipitation: Water droplets form and fall to the ground as rain, hail or snow
- Rivers: Water flows in rivers to the sea
River Erosion
- River erosion is the wearing away of the banks and bed of the river
- Four ways rivers erode:
- Abrasion: Material carried by river hits the sides and bed of the channel
- Attrition: Rocks and stones in the river bang against each other
- Hydraulic action: The force of water pushes into cracks in rock
- Corrosion: Rocks such as chalk and limestone are dissolved in the river water
River Transportation
- Rivers transport eroded rock material in four ways:
- Solution: Dissolved material
- Suspension: Fine material carried in the water
- Saltation: Small rocks bounce along the river bed
- Traction: Larger rocks rolled along the river bed
River Deposition
- Deposition occurs when a river slows down and loses energy to carry material
