Study Notes

Biology: The Study of Life

  • Biology is the scientific study of life
  • There are many levels of biological organization
  • The hierarchy of life includes cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, organisms, populations, communities, ecosystems, and the biosphere
  • All living things share characteristics: organization, metabolism, responsiveness, growth, development, reproduction, adaptation
  • There are five kingdoms of life: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia
  • Each organism has a unique and scientifically valid name known as its binomial nomenclature
  • Levels of taxonomy include: Domain, Supergroup, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
  • Supergroups include: Excavata, Chromalveolata, Rhizaria, Archaeplastida, Amoebozoa, Opisthokonta
  • All living things are composed of cells, and all cells come from preexisting cells
  • The internal environment of an organism remains relatively stable, within a range that is protective of life
  • All living organisms have a common ancestor and are adapted to a particular way of life
  • There are three main theories in Biology: cell theory, homeostasis, and evolution
