Study Notes
Respiratory System
- Consists of air passages and lungs that supply oxygen to the blood for cellular respiration and eliminate carbon dioxide from it.
Capillaries and Alveoli
- Surround the alveoli where carbon dioxide is released and oxygen is absorbed.
- Each alveoli is connected to an alveolar duct supplied by bronchioles within the lung.
Alveoli
- The basic component of the lung where gas exchange occurs.
- Oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange with capillaries in the alveoli.
- Both lungs contain approximately 300 million alveoli.
Diaphragm
- The principal muscle of respiration.
